USE YOUR PERSONALITY TRAITS TO MOTIVATE WEIGHT LOSS
Motivation is often the missing factor when it comes to losing weight. If you are tired of starting each New Year with the same resolution or are repeatedly starting a new weight loss plan every time Monday morning comes around, you are far from alone. It takes a lot more motivation to stick with a weight loss plan than it does to start a new one because the last one just didn’t work for you.
These tips offer a different approach to motivating your weight loss efforts by addressing the different personality types, preferences and basic needs you have as an individual. So what are you waiting for? Get started now :
1. Get Professional about How You Monitor Your Results
There is a lot of contradictory advice out there about how often you should weigh yourself when you are trying to lose weight. Ranging from daily to not at all! Instead of looking at fluctuations that could sabotage your weight loss plan, create a professional-looking graph that reflects your weekly weigh-ins (app recommendation? MyFitnessPal maybe?). Seeing your progress in graph format with your goal in sight will give you new perspective about how you are progressing over time.
2. Stop Thinking in Terms of Appearance Only
It’s time to get beyond putting photos of Victoria’s Secret models on the refrigerator door and buying new outfits that are three sizes to small and hoping to magically transform into the thinner person that you want to be. For real motivation, look at the statistics related to being overweight. Being overweight is a serious health hazard that puts you at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, fatty liver disease, heart disease, stroke and some types of cancer. Think about what those extra pounds are doing to your insides and the real difference in the quality of life it could made to lose them.
3. Put Yourself on the Spot
Plan a romantic vacation six months down the road. Make deposits on everything and spare no expense. Make sexy lingerie and swimsuits a part of your plan and invest heartily. Some people are more motivated by money than any other factor. If you can’t bear the thought of losing your investment and letting all those items you purchased ahead of time go to waste, this could be the perfect motivation for you. It doesn’t really matter what the reasoning is as long as the end result is success!
4. Sign Up to Work Out
If you don’t have a special someone to spend a romantic vacation with, sign up for an expensive gym membership (non-refundable!) instead. Get your money’s worth by working out and attending classes and you may even meet your special someone there.
Really Challenge Yourself with Your Workouts – Exercise is one-half of a successful workout formula and you shouldn’t be afraid to challenge yourself. If exercise is new to you, get your doctor’s approval before you start but start with a vengeance when you do! You know all those exercise videos advertised on TV with “power”, “extreme” and “hard” in their titles? Well, they aren’t just for “other people.” Your goal should be to include workouts that are both fun and challenging so you are motivated to do them regularly. You’ll also me motivated by the results!
5. Don’t Go Looking for Approval
Sometimes a support system works, but too often, you will find that new efforts at weight loss are met with negative attitudes and too much advice. Don’t expect your friends, family and co-workers to be your motivation. In fact, they may make sticking with your weight loss plans more difficult. If you learn ways to eat healthy when you go out, no one even has to know that you are trying to lose weight. By the time they notice, there is nothing to say except “Congratulations!”
