The Origin of Sports Supplements

RISE OF THE POWDERS AND THE SHAKES!

The Father of Modern Bodybuilding

About a century ago a man named Eugen Sandow who is also known as the “father modern bodybuilding” started advocating the necessity of diet and consumption of certain things in order to build muscle faster. Later such claims were supported by a man named Earle Liederman when he started using “Beef Extracts” to enhance muscle recovery and this marked the necessity of edible substances to enhance performance.

1950s- The Birth of Supplements

It was not until the mid-twentieth century that supplements had come into existence. The rise of sports supplements began when Irvin P. Johnson produced egg based protein powders and started marketing them in the 1950s.

Enter “The Devil” Era

As they say “We create our own demons”. Soon the word spread and in the 70s and 80s every bodybuilder could be seen consuming some sort of supplement. The market started flooding with numerous supplements that claimed to increase testosterone levels but very soon it was discovered that those were all false claims and the supplements were anything but effective.

1994 - Diamonds rain over Supplement Industries

By the end of 1980’s and early 90’s, supplements became a necessity for bodybuilders and athletes. The year 1994 proved to be a year of boon for the supplements industry as the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act was signed into law in the USA. Under this act, supplements did not require approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Association. Safety of supplements became the sole responsibility of the manufacturer.
