IT DOESN’T MATTER HOW MUCH WEIGHT YOU CAN CURL, WHAT IS IMPORTANT IS HOW YOU CAN FUNCTIONALLY MOVE YOUR BODY AROUND ON A DAILY BASIS.
Would you like to be able to move your ‘big Screen TV’ or that ‘5 seat sofa’ with ease?
Like our farmer, take the humble house mover - who already has a strong core and arms, and they didn’t even have to do any crunches or bicep curls. Why is this? The main reason is due to doing many multi-functional movements like bending down and grabbing containers, picking up refrigerators, moving cupboards, and so on and so forth. All of these movements actually work the core! In essence, this is also referred to as core to extremity exercises, as the mover basically gets himself organized, ignites the necessary muscles before lifting a heavy piece of furniture (while maintaining a stable midline), and activating the core to perform the movement.
Where to join others to do a functional fitness workout?
Move over, Muscle Beach in Venice, California! The most innovative outdoor functional training zone in the Middle East is in Dubai, and guess what, it is right on the beach. As Melanie Swan from the National UAE recently stated, “it is located at The Beach at Jumeirah Beach Residence, and it is one of several wellness initiatives in Dubai that seek to raise people’s fitness levels.”
If you can’t handle the soaring temperatures during the summertime, try these indoor alternatives that offer great functional training facilities and programs:
Here’s a quick Functional Training Circuit that you can do at home:
|Running on the Spot with High Knees||1 minute|
|Bodyweight Walking Lunges||20 reps|
|Bodyweight Squats||20 reps|
|Jumping Jacks||30 reps|
|Wall Sit Hold||30-45 seconds|
|Front Plank||30-45 seconds|
|Hip Bridge||20 reps|
|Donkey Kicks||10 reps per side|
Pro Tip: Perform the above circuit once and do your best to move forward from one exercise to the next with minimal rest. No equipment is needed. *For Push-Ups, the modified version is to do Knee Push-Ups.
Functional training is for anyone and everyone. Add functional movements to your workout program and you will almost instantly notice how it transfers to your daily life. The best thing about functional training is that it can be a quick, yet highly effective workout with little to no fitness equipment. Do you want to improve your golf swing? Finally beat your friend in a tennis match? Take on that challenging hike that you always dreamed of? You don’t have to worry about doing 100 push-ups or 300 sit-ups; do some functional training and you will not only build a stronger core, but also build more strength, flexibility, range of motion, conditioning, and balance.
