A Guide to Barre Exercise

All about the Barre

Barre workouts involve small and precise movements that focus on perfect form. Movements used are taken from a cross section of dance, ballet, yoga, pilates and other related exercise styles, and as the name suggests a fair amount of Barre work is included. The main function of this workout style is to focus on specific muscle groups that play an important role in postural health, but most of the time are neglected during workouts. Expect to work your inner and outer thighs, glutes, abdominals, and other important postural muscle groups. The strengthening and stretching of theses small muscle groups are critical for correct posture and alignment of the hips and spine. Plus, working them hard will have you crying like a baby, especially if you’re not used to it.

The Barre method was founded by Lydia Bach in 1959, which she called the Lotto Berk Method. It has only really gained popularity over the past few years due to the mass-commercialization of the program – a lot of Barre-type studios have been opened across the world. As Lydia has stated, “you’ve got to have a workout that’s tough but safe, building muscle and flexibility equally.” It is a program that’s challenging yet safe, which is right in the sweet spot of fitness programs and why it has gained so much popularity. People are getting leaner physiques, gaining better posture and becoming more flexible and stronger. Classes are all typically 1 hour in length and are usually held in small groups which helps maintain good form.
